Key Facts

  • Client: Modus Corovest (Blackpool)
  • Balfour Beatty company involved: Balfour Beatty Construction
  • As part of a 15-year master-plan to regenerate and revitalise the town of Blackpool, the Houndshill Shopping Centre is undergoing a £33 million refurbishment and extension project
  • The existing Houndshill Shopping Centre is being modernised through a combination of refurbishment and new-build construction works
  • The project will see the shopping centre treble in size to 398,000 sq ft
  • An additional 800 car parking spaces are being created to accommodate the increased number of shoppers
  • Located adjacent to the famous Blackpool Tower and the only enclosed shopping centre in the town, it is being transformed to provide a retail experience to rival other north-west cities such as Preston and Manchester
  • The existing centre will remain open and trading throughout the construction works, so minimising disruption to tenants and shoppers is vital to ensure the smooth running of the project
  • Balfour Beatty is working hard to reduce the impact the construction works have on the local environment and community
  • Some of the measures being employed include: cleaning vehicles before they leave site; using road sweepers to clean the roads around the site to reduce the amount of mud and debris on local highways; and daily noise monitoring
  • Balfour Beatty is also helping to reduce the impact on the environment by recycling and re-using waste materials such as crushed materials from demolition works, timber, cardboard and paper used on the site
